I Could Be Rich (2021) explores the uncertainty of a state and how, as observers, we tend to be fatalistic about it. The work consists of numerous scratch cards, familiar objects tied to luck, deeply embedded in our economy and lifestyle.
As a child, I believed that the numbers on a raspadinha (scratch card) alternated continuously until we intervened with a coin.
The project was inspired by Schrödinger’s cat, a thought experiment illustrating how a state remains undefined until it is observed. The goal was to create a moment of reflection, drawing a parallel between quantum uncertainty and everyday life—where we often place faith in the unknown, believing in possibilities yet to be revealed. Whether we call it hope or chance, reality only unfolds once we take action.
This installation was created using over 100 scratch cards, collected from traditional Portuguese game houses and stationery shops. Additionally, a curated selection of 30 thematic scratch cards was sourced directly from Jogos Santa Casa, the most renowned State Social Games institution in Portugal.
